Orientation

  • When, where, why and how long?

    Orientation will be held on 22 February 2020.
    It is held at El Rancho, Waikanae. The address is 58 Weggery Drive, Waikanae Beach, Waikanae.

    The purpose of Orientation is part of our onboarding process, the key objectives of the day are: to introduce you to your Pūkenga, confirm your Programme - Te Pū or Te Weu, and provide you with details of the Programme and answer any questions you may have.

  • I cannot make Orientation, what do I do?

    We will provide you with an on-boarding package the week after Orientation. Please email [email protected] to let us know you can not make it and to ensure you receive the onboarding package.

  • Can I bring my children, family or friends with me?

    No, orientation is strictly for participants of the programme.

  • I am gluten free or have other dietary requirements, how can I communicate these?

    El Rancho caterers accommodate most dietary requirements. A form will be sent out to all participants prior to orientation. There will be a section in the form where you can indicate your dietary requirements.

  • Who do I inform of my absence at night class?

    Please email [email protected] , once we receive your email we will advise your pūkenga.

  • Can I temporarily change my location and/or night class?

    Potentially. It will depend on a space being available at another class. Please email [email protected] for confirmation.

  • Can I permanantly change my location and/or night class?

    Potentially. It will depend on a space being available at another class. Please email [email protected] for confirmation.

  • I cannot make my class that is only delivered on Mondays, can I attend a lower level on a Wednesday night?

    No. We would prefer you complete the material from your relevant level. Therefore, if you cannot attend class, please review the online lessons for that week and advise of your absence by emailing [email protected]

  • Can I bring my child/ren to any night classes?

    No, Kāuru has a strict policy of no children in class, in fairness to all participants. We do not want your class peers to be distracted and have their learning hindered in anyway. It is better to review the online lessons if you are unable to attend.

Online Ako Learning Platform

  • When will I get my log in details?

    You will receive your login credentials around Orientaion Day.

  • Do I have to do the online lessons?

    The online lessons provide the theory for your night class. By becoming familiar with the theory before class it gives you more time to practice and speak te reo Māori during class. It is important you are familiar with the online material before attending your night class.

  • How long are the online lessons each week?

    There are short videos of up to 5 minutes each. There are between two and four videos to review before class each week.

  • Where do I log on to access the online lessons?

    On the top right hand corner of your screen you will see a "sign in", you log in here to access the online lessons.

  • Who do I contact if I have trouble logging into the online platform?

    Please contact [email protected], alternatively you can try resetting your password.

  • Why can't I see the whole course on the online platform?

    Each week is released a week prior to the corresponding night class. This ensures you are learning sequentially and are not overwhelmed by too much information at once.

  • What is "Extension" learning?

    Some weeks have "Extension" learning which is additional learning for those who wish to extend their knowledge in a particular area. Extension learning is optional.

  • What are the downloadable resources?

    At the end of each lesson there may be downloadable pdf resources or links to additional resources. These are provided to assist your learning journey. These are for your personal use and may NOT be copied and distributed.

Noho Wānanga

  • What are the dates of the noho wānanga?

    Te Pū Te Weu
    Noho 1 3-5 April 27-29 March
    Noho 2 22-24 May 8-10 May
    Noho 3 19-22 June 19-22 June
  • Do I need to attend all the Noho Wānanga?

    There are a total of three wānanga provided for the participants of each level with the option to stay overnight. We expect that participants will attend the third noho wānanga and at least one of the first two noho wānanga.

  • I have to go home at night, is this possible?

    Yes it is. If you cannot stay the night, sessions usually finish by 8:30 at night and resume at 9 am in the morning.

  • What is the accommodation like?

    El Rancho provides bunks in rooms of 6 to 8 people. Accommodation blocks are allocated by gender. You will sign up at each noho to the rooms you wish to be in.

  • Does El Rancho cater for food allergies?

    You will be asked to indicate any allergies or dietary preferences such as vegan, gluten free, nut free, dairy free and the like. You are also welcome to bring your own prepared food. Kitchen facilities are not available to cook but a microwave is available.

  • What do I wear?

    Bring comfortable, activewear attire.

  • Is bedding provided?

    You will need to bring a sheet, blankets and pillow with pillowcase. Only a mattress is provided.

  • Can my partner or children stay?

    No sorry, the Noho Wānanga are strictly for participants of the programme.

  • Where can I park my car?

    There is ample car parks available on site.
